The Origins of Lakeland Cryo and Recovery

A Concept Becomes Reality

— The Origins of Lakeland Cryo and Recovery, by Mike Knaisch, MS, ATC – Owner

Some 10 years ago I had this idea of a “one stop shop” for health and fitness.  Picture a facility that housed Orthopedic surgeons, Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, ART practitioners, Massage Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Strength and Conditioning Coaches where people can get an assortment of services under one roof.  So no longer would you have to piece out your Health and Fitness “Team” where you would see your massage therapist over here and then have to drive across town, or to another one, to get your workout in.

Fast forward to today, and even though that facility has not happened we bring the humble beginnings of one as we open Lakeland Cryo and Recovery, located inside CrossFit Lakeland, Polk County’s original, Functional Training Gym.  Bringing together, for the first time in this area, a premier strength and conditioning facility and an advanced Recovery Center under one roof.

It was in a meeting earlier this year with a colleague that brought the idea of a Public Athletic Training Room back into the fold after being on the shelf for these 10 years.

The concept is born out of the Athletic Training rooms that you’ll find in High Schools, College’s, and Professional Sports.  My original stomping grounds if you will for my first 15 years out of grad school.  Serving at two Universities as an Athletic Trainer and Adjunct Professor treating young athlete’s injuries and teaching future certified athletic trainers their craft.

What is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)?  Well, we often get confused with strength and conditioning coaches.  And while our fields do intersect at times they are also both completely different.  Our background and education is in the prevention, treatment, and care of acute and chronic orthopedic injuries and trained in on-field emergency care.

All ATC’s are nationally board certified and hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree with most going on to get earn a Master’s or Doctorate degree.   I received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training.  Lakeland Cryo and Recovery and CrossFit Lakeland have a total of Three ATC’s on staff, one of which is also a Physician’s Assistant.  This brings a level of orthopedic knowledge and experience that you can only find in Physical Therapy Clinics or Collegiate/Pro settings.

Our new facility houses some of the most advanced technology available to Athletic Trainers today.  The ability to offer these services to people, other than college and pro athletes, will allow functional fitness enthusiasts, weekend warriors, endurance junkies and all the like to receive some of the same treatments that high level athletes have access to on a daily basis.

Our Impact CryoSauna offers three levels of cryotherapy ranging from -130deg to -187deg F in a 3-minute session.

The CryoSauna is at the forefront of our recovery center.  Whole Body Cryotherapy has been around for some time now as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.  However, it’s use in the athletic recovery setting is just recently becoming popular.  We wanted to bring the latest recovery technology to the Polk County Area and we’re excited to be the first to make it available to the public.

We’ll be doing a blog post on each service we offer, describing what you can expect during a session and what benefits each one offers.  But for now, we’re looking forward to seeing you in our center to check out what we can do to make you perform better and recover faster.
